KYŌTO

Walk the mornings when Kyoto is still empty. Not the postcard crowds — the alleyways before the shrines open.

Why Kyoto

Kyoto isn't a museum — it's a living thousand-year-old city. On the same block, you'll pass a Heian-era temple and a 2020s bakery. Which is exactly why time of day and season change what you see.

Our approach: mornings and evenings. Skip the midday crowds; walk the shrines in silence. Hanamikoji at night, Fushimi Inari at dawn. That's when the rhythm makes sense.

04What to do

Here's how we'd do it.

  1. 01

    Gion at 7 a.m.

The Kyoto in the photos exists — but only before the tourists wake. Walk Hanamikoji when it's still just the streetlights and the stone.

  2. 02

Higashiyama temples, in the right order

Kiyomizu → Ninen-zaka → Sannen-zaka → Kodai-ji → Yasaka. Choose your direction before the crowds do it for you.

  3. 03

Fushimi Inari, all the way up

The Instagram gate photo is just the entrance. Two hours round trip to the summit — and a full Kyoto basin view no one else stays for.

  4. 04

    Philosopher's Path across the seasons

Cherries in spring, maples in autumn, silence in winter. One hour, three temples: Eikan-do, Nanzen-ji, Ginkaku-ji.

  5. 05

    Arashiyama, twice a day

The bamboo grove empties before 8 a.m. The autumn night illumination is worth a return trip. Never a day trip if you can help it.
