Why Osaka
Osaka isn't just "the food city." Four distinct faces live inside a 15-minute subway ride — Namba's loud strip, Umeda's commerce, Tenma's old-town rhythm, Nakanoshima's water edge.
Kyoto is 30 minutes out, Kobe 20. Use Osaka as a Kansai base and you double what one city gives you. Our approach: start with the local face. The tourist strip comes later, if at all.

Skip the loud tourist strip. Start at Hozenji Yokocho and work south — one dish per stop, five stops total.

The country's most disorienting station, mapped in 12 minutes. Know the shortcut lines before you arrive.

Morning at Tenma's covered market
Japan's longest arcade shows its real face before 9 a.m. Bakeries, kissaten, fish stalls in that order.
